Folk tale for political adults

Once upon a time in a certain small village lived a young boy called Olara, he had big dreams and didn’t mind sharing them with whoever cared enough to listen. Olara’s big dream was to travel to a distant land called FREEDOM, he’d had stories about this place and vowed to reach there one day. Olara worked hard and saved some money to buy a special material called a KITENGE which he took to the village tailor, he wanted to look his best when he got to the land of FREEDOM.

This young boy came from a fairly wealthy family and his Dad owned the only car in the village however, he refused to grant his son the car to take him to the land of FREEDOM so poor Olara had to device a new plan to get him there. He decided that on Monday or Thursday which happened to be market days in his village, he’d walk all the way to the land of FREEDOM.

Soon rumors started circulating in the village about Olara’s intention to walk all the way to the land of FREEDOM. Some sympathized with him while others like the notorious sons of Mr Kayihura scorned his efforts; they regarded him as a show off especially because of his special material the KITENGE. As fate would have it, the only road that led to the land of FREEDOM passed through Mr Kayihura’s compound. So whoever dreamed of travelling to the land of FREEDOM had to seek permission from Mr Kayihura first, a thing most believe our dear Olara forgot to do due to his excitement about his impending journey.

On Monday he visited the tailor but unfortunately his material was not yet ready so he postponed his journey to Thursday. Mr Kayihura’s notorious sons waited on Thursday by the road for Olara. They had canes, catapults, stones and a long pipe from the only bore hole in the village which happened to be theirs.

On Thursday as planned, Olara went to the tailor first to collect his special material which had been sewn into a shirt that looked like a dress; he’d strictly instructed the tailor not to waste any material so the tailor made it an oversize. Clad in his best special material, the dress like shirt called a KITENGE; Olara embarked on his journey to the land of FREEDOM; however, on reaching Mr Kayihura’s compound it dawned on him that he’d forgotten to seek permission from Mr Kayihura but still he didn’t let that deter him, he put on a brave face and hoped for the best, something that didn’t go down well with Mr Kayihura’s notorious sons.

What happened next was a tragedy, the notorious sons of Mr Kayihura first used their catapults, but that didn’t work because surprisingly all the shots they made were a miss, then they decided to use the canes but that too failed because there were too many witnesses and these notorious sons of Mr Kayihura feared to be reported to Olara’s father. With only one option left, they turned on the water from their bore hole, because even if the witnesses reported them, they could easily deny and lie that Olara just fell in a ditch, with that as a full proof plan, they showered poor Olara till the dye in his special material went out.

He sat by the road and wished he could cry, his special material had been ruined to the point that it turned pink, with a solemn look, he walked back to his home, all his hopes of reaching the land of FREEDOM dashed, poor, poor, poor Olara.
